Sustainable building is a concept which is fast catching up with urban dwellers. The concepts involved in sustainable building or construction primarily reflect the principals of sustainable development i.e. environmental protection, economic development, and social development, in design, building, maintenance and occupation of buildings. These buildings are designed and constructed keeping in mind the environmental standards.

Sustainable buildings will help minimise energy requirements and help reduce water consumption, use materials which are of low environmental impact e.g. low embodied energy and resource efficient, reduce wastage, conserve and enhance the natural environment and safeguard human health and well-being too.

While constructing a green home building, you must keep in mind certain factors:

Environmental factors: It is advisable to give due consideration to conservation and enhancement of the site ecology or biodiversity.

Look into how much energy is consumed: If suitable measures are taken to minimise energy consumption, high levels of insulation are adopted, it can help minimise energy consumption. Maximising daylight and using energy efficient lighting and appliances can also help achieve the goals.

Transportation facilities: If the site of construction is nearby, it can help minimise the expenses. One should give due consideration to transport routes, proximity to amenities and places of work, space for home working also.

Water consumption: The quantity of water consumed, reusing rainwater, water efficient appliances, minimising and attenuating surface water run-off to prevent flooding and pollution can all help save water.

Affordability: If it is proving very expensive, the cost of ownership can be minimised.

This can also help curb down the degradation of the environment to a large extent. The choices made now will influence the quality of life of the next generation. This can also enhance the look of the house. Sustainable building is not only eco friendly but also less expensive. Usage of natural, non-industrial materials, will also improve the energy equation when building.

Following certain green home building guidelines can help construct an environment friendly building. Apart from houses, architecture and design firms, construction and development, hospitality, and other service providers too have incorporated these guidelines. Such buildings are environment friendly. As compared to commercial sector, the residential sector has lagged behind.

Going in for such houses will help save a substantial amount of money too. Since, the products used for construction of houses are natural, they will be less expensive. You can make your contribution by opting for eco friendly houses. Looking online for information on construction of such houses can help get the required details about green home building. One can get all the required information about sustainable architecture and natural building.

It is quite undeniable that your everyday life is surrounded by problems, which sometimes really bring despair to you. Some of the problems that get into your nerves are those which have something to do with your monthly bills like your electric bills, which seem to be increasing as time passes by. Thus, you have to start looking for an alternative way in which you can somehow save a certain amount of money concerning your monthly electric bill. As a matter of fact, there are already many ways which you can consider in order to cut down the cost of your electric bills. One of these ways is actually known as the do-it-yourself solar and windpower generator system.

In this day and age, you can notice that everything seems to be possible already. You can definitely do anything that you want for your own sake without the help of any experts especially when it comes to generating your own home with a DIY wind, as well as solar power system. Building your own solar and windpower system may sound to be difficult at first, but it will just be easier on your part as the day goes by. You just have to believe in yourself that you can do it just for the sake of cutting down the cost of your bills and saving a huge sum of money.

Here are some simple steps on how you can build your own solar and windpower system without the assistance of any experts:

• Buy a DIY kit. DIY kits for a solar or windpower system are widely available in the market or even in the worldwide web nowadays. You simply have to make sure to buy the best and ideal kits in order to successfully build your own power system as well as to have no regrets at all in the long run.

• Put out and prepare all the needed materials. Almost all of the materials needed in constructing your own power system are already included in the DIY kits. You just have to put all those materials out to get started. Aside from that, you also have to prepare the tools and equipment, which you are going to use in the solar and windpower system construction process. Some of the basic tools, which you are going to use, are the cutting tools, fastening tools, measuring tools, and moving tools.

• Read the instructions thoroughly. The DIY kits usually include the instructions or the step-by-step process, which you need to perform in order to successfully build your own homemade power system. You have to make sure to read all the instructions thoroughly and very carefully. In doing so, you can be certain that building your own power system will just be a piece of cake on your part.

Indeed, building your own solar and windpower system is truly possible in today’s era. You simply have to see to it to follow all the aforementioned steps on how to build your own power system. After all, there is no harm associated if you are going to consider the steps mentioned above. It can even help you make the complicated construction process a bit easier on your part.

Solar Energy and Power

Abhishek Agarwal asked:

Experts on "green" alternative energy say that the shift from the current petroleum-powered society will not be an entirely easy one. The amount of expertise and infrastructures needed to push that shift looks mind-boggling, although Germany has already shown its capacity to generate at least 10 per cent of its total energy needs from wind turbines and solar clusters. Also there has also been a noticeable rise in the number of companies engaged in power generation that supports the alternative energy goals, moved apparently by rebate incentives and tax amnesties offered by governments involved. The expansive lag we need to close indicates how complacent we have been for a long time on the alternative energy mission. Thus it has not been entirely surprising that we find ourselves today cramming to recover opportunities offered by alternative energy sources.

Alternative energy experts further suggest that there is a need for a coordinated global effort to lessen our almost total reliance on petroleum. This traditional energy source, being largely non-renewable, is bound to become more costly to produce and therefore more expensive to consumers. It is also one of the biggest causes of environmental pollution. Moreover, continued oil exploration by its nature is an ecosystem hazard.

The consensus among experts is that there is enough stockpile for us to enjoy up to 30 years of relatively inexpensive gas and oil. They say that in 20 years after that period countries who remain dependent on that energy source by more than 10 percent of their need would be courting disaster. And yet there is little indication that countries are proceeding in that direction. On the contrary, total demand for oil has been increasing since the 1970s.

Resistance to the shift from traditional to alternative energy sources comes mostly from vested business interests. The oil industry is a huge global business empire. Alternative energy sources can threaten the profitability of this industry and its stakeholders cannot just sit and watch the source of their wealth dissipate into thin air. The logical route therefore, is to promote the profitability in the market of alternative energy sources, something which at present is wanting. Consultants advice that this needs inter-government or multi-lateral support, considering among other things the huge start-up investments and research which such a transition would entail. Moreover, they also concede that even if such international collaboration achieves its immediate objectives, we still need a long time horizon within which an alternative energy regime can be established.

It is important for the well-off countries like Japan, the US, Western Europe and others to lead the effort of minimizing global dependence on oil. Elsewhere it can be tough but poorer countries can never be expected to lift themselves from the looming oil crisis, although they may console themselves with the fact that they can generate power from coal and whatever oil reserves they have. In any event, peoples around the world will have few choices except to wean themselves from imported fuel and develop their capability to generated power from alternative sources. The switch from black oil to alternative green is inevitable, and the time to do it is now.
